FAQ

Powder coating, answered.

What people ask most about blasting and powder coating. If your part isn't covered here, call (239) 810-4999.

  1. What is powder coating?

Powder coating is a dry finish for metal. A fine powder is applied to clean, bare metal and then cured with heat, which flows it into one continuous coat. It is common on wheels, frames, railings and outdoor furniture.

  2. What can be powder coated?

Generally, metal parts that can take the heat of the cure — steel and aluminum are the most common. Wood, most plastics, rubber and glass cannot go through a cure. If you are not sure about a part, call (239) 810-4999 and describe it.

  3. Why does a part get sandblasted before it is coated?

A powder coat needs clean metal to bond to. Blasting removes rust, scale, old paint and old powder, and leaves a surface profile the new coat can grip.

  4. Do I need to take my part apart first?

Usually anything that cannot be blasted or heated has to come off — rubber seals, bearings, glass, electronics, and tires on wheels. How far to strip a part depends on the part, so ask the shop before you start taking it apart.

  5. Can a part that was already powder coated be redone?

Generally yes, but the old coat normally has to be removed first, which is one of the things blasting is for. Mention the old finish when you ask for a quote.

  6. Can I choose the color and finish?

Powder comes in many colors and in several finish families — gloss, satin, matte, textured, metallic, candy and two-tone. Ask which colors and finishes suit your part, and bring a reference if you have a color in mind.

  7. What is Cerakote, and is it different from powder coating?

Cerakote is a ceramic-based coating sprayed on in a much thinner layer than powder coat, then cured. Projekt Lab offers both, so ask which suits your part.

  8. How much does powder coating cost?

It depends on the part: its size, its condition, how much blasting and prep it needs, the finish you choose and how many pieces are in the job. Call or use the quote form to get a price for your part.

  9. How long does a job take?

It depends on the size of the job, the prep it needs and the shop’s schedule at the time. Ask for a timeframe when you get your quote.

  10. Where is the shop?

Projekt Lab is at 2242 Hemingway Dr A, Fort Myers, FL 33912. Call (239) 810-4999 before you drive over to confirm a good time to drop parts off.

  11. How do I get a quote?
