DetailsFinish families
Pick the finish, not just the color
The same color reads differently in gloss, satin or a textured coat. These are the finish families to ask about.
- Gloss High shine with a wet, reflective look.
- Satin A low, soft sheen — clean without the glare.
- Matte Flat, with little to no reflection.
- Textured Wrinkle and hammered-style coats you can feel.
- Candy Translucent color over a bright base for depth.
- Two-tone Two colors or finishes on one part.
Chips are illustrations of each finish type, not a stocked-color chart — ask the shop which colors suit your part. More on custom colors & finishes
How powder coating works
Strip it. Coat it. Cure it.
-
Strip & prep
Rust, old paint, old powder and grease come off first — that is what blasting is for. A coat is only as good as the surface under it.
-
Apply the powder
A dry powder in the chosen color and finish is applied to the clean metal, edges and recesses included.
-
Cure
Heat flows the powder into one continuous coat. Once it has cooled, the part is ready to go back on.
The general process. What your part needs is worked out when the shop sees it.

Questions
Before you bring a part in
Straight answers to what people ask most about powder coating and blasting.
What can be powder coated?
Generally, metal parts that can take the heat of the cure — steel and aluminum are the most common. Wood, most plastics, rubber and glass cannot go through a cure. If you are not sure about a part, call (239) 810-4999 and describe it.
Why does a part get sandblasted before it is coated?
A powder coat needs clean metal to bond to. Blasting removes rust, scale, old paint and old powder, and leaves a surface profile the new coat can grip.
